Housing Choice Voucher Program
The waiting list for the Housing Choice Voucher Program is CLOSED. (Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania, Stafford, King George, Caroline and Fauquier Counties). APPLICATIONS ARE NOT BEING ACCEPTED. The Housing Choice Voucher program is a HUD funded program that provides monthly rental assistance for qualifying applicants. We are currently absorbing.

Moving with the Voucher
Here is our VACATE PACKET, the documents that are required for moving units, transferring in or out of our office, and porting OUT.
Please complete the packet to initiate your move.
To learn more about the move process, attend a Move Briefing available every Thursday from 1pm – 2pm. The Move Briefing is not required, but provides the opportunity to learn more about the process and ask questions in person.
Voucher Portability
A family’s housing needs change over time with changes in family size and job locations. For that reason The Housing Choice Voucher Program is designed to allow families to move without the loss of housing assistance.
Under the Housing Choice Voucher Program, new voucher-holders may choose a unit anywhere in the United States if the family has lived within the jurisdiction of that Issuing PHA for the first twelve months of housing assistance. Some areas may waive this under special circumstances.
Moves to another jurisdiction or State are permissible if the family notifies their PHA ahead of time, terminates its existing lease within the lease provisions, and finds acceptable alternate housing.

Can you choose where to live?
The participant is free to choose any housing that meets the requirements of the Housing Choice Voucher Program and is not limited to units located in subsidized housing projects. Contact your local Public Housing Agent (PHA) to learn about how to apply to the program and the requirements when looking for a housing .
You can move while receiving assistance from the voucher program
The Housing Choice Voucher Program is designed to allow families to move without the loss of housing assistance. Moves are permissible if the family notifies the PHA ahead of time, terminates its existing lease within the lease provisions, and finds acceptable alternate housing.
You have responsibilities as the tenant while receiving assistance
While receiving assistance from the Housing Choice Voucher Program, the tenant must comply with the lease and the program requirements, pay its share of rent on time, maintain the unit in good condition and notify the PHA of any changes in income or family composition.
The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) covers the cost of the program
The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) provides funds to allow PHAs to make housing assistance payments on behalf of the families. HUD also pays the PHA a fee for the costs of administering the program. When additional funds become available to assist new families, HUD invites PHAs to submit applications for funds for additional housing vouchers.
